We are now in the final week of college sport for the winter codes. It’s great to see three Rongotai teams in the football finals this week.
Reviewing the last week of sport, in Badminton, the seniors finished third in the Wellington Senior competition narrowly missing out on the final. Next week the Senior A team will compete at the Yonex Nationals in Porirua. This is a great opportunity for the boys to test themselves against the best in the country with all the boys returning to the team in 2020. This is an important step in their development.
In Basketball, the juniors unfortunately went down to Wellington College in the semi-final 76-68. They now shift their focus to the Junior Regional Tournament being held in Napier.
The Junior B team played Paraparaumu on Tuesday night in their final, going down a super close 36-35. Really unlucky but it has been a great season for them none-the-less.
The seniors went down to Tawa College in the semi-final 94-76 last Friday, to end their run to defend the Pohlen Cup. It was a tough battle that saw they boys fight back a number of times but in the end it was one bridge too far. The boys have plenty left to play for as they go into Regionals which will be next week at the ASB Stadium in Wellington, and with a couple of late games the boys will look forward to us having their back.
In Hockey, the 1st XI went down in the third period of extra time 2-1 to Tawa College to finish 6th overall. Next week they head down to Christchurch to play in the elite Rankin Cup tournament. The 2nd XI won the third place play-off, beating St Bernard’s 3-1 to wrap up their season.
We have a number of teams in the College Sport Wellington Football finals day that will be held here at Rongotai tomorrow.
The Junior Blue team will take on Paraparaumu at 11am having got there through finishing first after the round robin stage and beating Wellington College in the semi-final.
The 3rd XI, after having an undefeated season will take on Wellington College at 1pm so a good chance to double up here for the supporters – get behind our boys!
The 2nds played Naenae College last Saturday, losing in a close match. They take on Naenae again on Saturday in the final at 11am. The 2nds and 3rds have been the best in their respective leagues all season, now it’s time for them to show it one last time.
The 1st XI, after finishing 8th in the regular season will travel to Taupo to compete in the Rex Dawkin Cup. The team will look to finish the season on a high after putting in some quality performances during the year without quite getting the results.
In Rugby, the U14 and U15 teams will battle it out in regional tournaments in Wellington next week.
