Rongotai College

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Rongotai College Board is entrusted to work on behalf of all stakeholders
and is accountable for the school’s performance. It emphasises strategic
leadership, sets the vision for the school and ensures that it complies with legal
and policy requirements. Policies are at a governance level and outline clear
delegations to the Principal. The Board and Principal form the leadership team
with the role of each documented and understood. The Principal reports to the
Board as a whole with committees used sparingly and only when a need is
identified in order to contribute to Board work. The Board is proactive rather than
reactive in its operations and decision making and does not involve itself in the
administrative details of the day to day running of the school. Enhancing student
achievement is its focus.

Rongotai College Board Members 2010

Lynn McBain - Chair
I was elected to the Rongotai Board of Trustees in the 2010 election and took the role of chair in May 2010. I have governance experience in the education sector through my time as member and chair of the SWIS Board of Trustees. In the health sector I am currently involved in clinical governance locally, regionally and nationally on various committees and advisory groups.

My husband (a Rongotai Old Boy) and I have a son who is presently in Year 11 at Rongotai. We also have two daughters, one now finished school and the other in Year 8. We have lived in the southern suburbs for over 20 years. In my professional life I am a self employed general practitioner for half of my week and for the other half I teach at tertiary level as a senior lecturer in General Practice at the University of Otago, Wellington.

I am looking forward to my involvement on the Rongotai Board and working with the other Board members, the staff, students and community for the benefit of Rongotai College. I would like to see all of the students achieving to the absolute best of their ability and leave Rongotai as confident young men able to work alongside anyone in New Zealand or the world beyond.

Michael Heriot
This is my first term as a Board of Trustees member. My family and I have lived in Strathmore for many years. I work as a financial adviser and specialise in investment advice.

Our oldest son attended and has left Rongotai and currently our youngest son is in Year 9.

My goal is to support an already great school in as many ways as I can. I see Rongotai as having a strong history and fine spirit and that is a reflection on the staff, pupils and school community. I am interested in providing a link to the community that fosters participation and encourages parents to become more involved with their boys’ education. More involvement makes for better results! I am also very keen to see this generation of boys equipped to become the men of the future. We all want our boys to have the ability, attitude and desire to succeed, and the college continues to improve as the environment to achieve this.

I am new to this role of school trustee but am very committed. It is definitely an exciting time for Rongotai College. If you would like to make contact over any matter, please contract me via the school.

Faalogo Talosaga Va’ai
I am into my third term as a Board member. I live in Porirua and I work as a Business Analyst / Relationship Manager for the Pacific Division, Workforce of the Department of Labour. I have one boy and a nephew currently attending Rongotai College, one in Year 11, and the other in Year 12, whilst our other two sons finished at Rongotai in 2007 and 2008. Our boys enjoy attending Rongotai College even though it means a long trip in and out everyday with many other
boys from Porirua who also attend Rongotai.

As a Board member, my aim is to help provide our boys with educational and sporting opportunities, through strengthening relationships with teachers, students and families, to build an well-rounded man of the future, in a safe and healthy environment.

David Smith
I am married to Tracy and we have three children - a son in Year 11 at Rongotai College, a daughter at EBIS and a son who is now at university. Our family has had three generations of males attend Rongotai College.

My work experience is in event management, communications, and sales and marketing.

My commitment to the Rongotai College community is to do my best to ensure that all our boys receive a quality education that provides opportunities for them to excel in academic, sporting, arts and cultural activities; within an environment that is safe, respectful, encouraging and fiscally responsible, and that prepares them for the future.
