Football Academy

Rongotai College, footballRC and WYNRS recently launched the Rongotai College Football Academy.

WYNRS, headed by Oceania Player of the Century and Rongotai College old boy, Wynton Rufer, has been operating successfully in several locations in New Zealand for the last 13 years. WYNRS believe in making “World class soccer players and world class citizens” – a set of values we fully endorse. Their objectives are:

  • To provide high quality, certicicated soccer coaching for 5 to 15 year olds.
  • To provide a comprehensive coaching and representative programme to develop talented  players.
  • To develop a strong skill base in youth soccer in New Zealand through a programme of technical and skill development.
  • To equip youth with vision and leadership abilities.
  • To produce world class athletes and future leaders of the community.

The WYNRS programme at Rongotai College operates on several levels:

  • After school and holiday programmes for students of all ages from any primary or intermediate school.
  • Rongotai College Football Academy.

If you wish to understand more about WYNRS and its after school and holiday programmes, please refer to their website www.wynrs.co.nz.

Rongotai College Football Academy
The Rongotai College Football Academy operates at school for selected Year 9 to Year 11 students, with the intention of providing world class football development to enable Rongotai College 1st XI to regain the mantle of No 1 football college in New Zealand. This honour was last held during the era of Wynton Rufer and Billy Harris. We will be using Wynton’s WYNRS programme as the basis for the technical and skills development that we are offering your son.

The Rongotai Academy operates at lunchtimes for the school year, with players training for 45 minutes per session either two or three lunchtimes per week depending on whether they are an outfield player of a goal keeper.

Football Academy (3 times per week) Monday, Tuesday & Friday
Goalie School (2 times per week) Wednesday & Thursday

These Academy training sessions are in addition to usual team trainings which are held after school. In many instances players will now have four or five trainings a week. This is a considerable investment in football and reflects the effort and motivation needed to develop into a top class footballer.

Wynton Rufer is the Rongotai College Football Academy Director, and Tayo Agunlejika has been employed as WYNRS ‘Head Coach’, and is responsible for delivering all programmes at Rongotai College.

WYNRS also have intern students from Cologne University, Germany who are studying for their UEFA Coaches Level 2 Coaching Qualification (this is one of the best coaching qualifications available anywhere in the world). These interns are placed at Rongotai College for varying periods of time.

This is an exciting time for football at Rongotai College. I am sure that your son will enjoy the quality coaching and will continue to develop his football skills and his technique. I am sure we will all enjoy the journey towards Rongotai once again being New Zealand’s number 1 football college.
