Gymnasium Fire

26 December 2010

In the early hours of the morning of Sunday 26 December the fire brigade were called to a fire at the Rongotai College Gymnasium. Unfortunately, all they could do was contain the fire as the Gym was well alight by the time they arrived on site. As a consequence, that night we lost our gymnasium and all of the Physical Education, athletics, basketball, gymnastics, football, tennis and weights equipment that was in the Gymnasium. One of the items lost was a new electronic scoreboard system that we had recently purchased, which was still in its shipping crates!

Due to the hazard presented by roofing iron and small quantities of asbestos and the forecasted high winds, a decision was made to demolish what remained of the building as soon as possible. This occurred within three days of the fire, and the site was fully cleared of debris within one week. No investigation was able to occur, so we may never know the cause of the fire.

We are currently working with the Ministry of Education to provide a temporary facility while our new gymnasium is built. The temporary facility will be a large garage-type building built on the site of the old Gymnasium. It will allow our Physical Education classes to be housed indoors during Term 2. The Ministry of Education have agreed to finance this facility, and we are how awaiting permission from the Wellington City Council to go ahead with the project. We will update you as the project develops.

We are also working with the Ministry of Education to build our new Gymnasium. While it is early days, we would like to have our new Gymnasium ready for use early in 2012. I am sure it will be a facility we can all be proud of, and it will serve us well into the future. I will update the college community as news comes to hand.

Many old boys, current students, families and the general public have expressed their shock and disappointment and also a desire to help.

Accordingly, we have opened an account at the ASB for those who wish to give a donation to help with the rebuilding and refurbishment of our gym.

Donations can be made to the college or anonymously into the following bank account - ASB 12-3141-0383117-00.

If you would like a receipt for your donation, please contact Ross Findlay, Sports Director on email
